The Breast Cancer
Learning Center

This Learning Center is a freely accessible educational platform for nursing healthcare providers who are involved in the management of patients with hormone receptor positive (HR+)/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative (HER2-) early breast cancer (EBC). Our goal is to ensure that you—the oncology nurse professional—have access to the most accurate, up-to-date information for the treatment of these patients.

We encourage you to share this educational resource with your colleagues and your healthcare team.

CDK4/6 Inhibitors in HR+/HER2- EBC: Updates in Adjuvant Therapy Paradigms for High Risk Disease

Credit Available: 0.50 ANCC contact hours

In this didactic activity, expert Mikel Ross, MSN, RN, AGPCNP-BC, OCN, CBCN, will take learners on a tour of the latest science and evidence behind the use of CDK4/6 inhibitors as part of adjuvant therapy for patients with high-risk, HR+/HER2- EBC. The current experience with CDK4/6 inhibitors in patients with early-to-advanced-stage breast cancer (including efficacy and safety highlights from recent studies), will be presented in a conversational, interactive manner, geared specifically towards an oncology nurse audience. The expert will then turn to acknowledge the challenging adherence and persistence issues that are often faced when using this treatment class in clinical practice.

Adverse Event Management of Oral Therapies in HR+/HER2- EBC

Credit Available: 0.75 ANCC contact hours

In this activity, expert Sarah Donahue, MPH, NP, will take learners on a deep dive into the unique safety profiles and pharmacovigilance considerations of oral adjuvant therapies for patients with high-risk, HR+/HER2- EBC, considering endocrine therapy and newly approved CDK4/6 inhibitor therapy, as seen through the oncology nurse’s lens. Case-based discussions will provide learners with clinically useful practical strategies to prevent and manage adverse events in patients receiving adjuvant oral therapies for HR+/HER2 EBC, with the goal of promoting long-term adherence to treatment.

Nurse-led Strategies to Overcome Barriers to Adherence and Persistence to Oral Therapies in HR+/HER2- EBC

Credit Available: 0.50 ANCC contact hours

In this activity, expert Sarah Donahue, MPH, NP, will explore the role of the oncology nurse in addressing barriers to treatment adherence in patients with high-risk HR+/HER2- EBC who are receiving oral therapy. Case-based discussions will offer learners a multifaceted approach for optimizing treatment adherence, including strategies for identifying patients at risk for non-adherence, assessing and addressing patients’ treatment-related educational needs, and managing side effects of oral therapies (both endocrine therapies and novel CDK4/6 inhibitors).

Engaging Patients in Care: Strategies for Shared Decision-making and Patient Education

Credit Available: 0.50 ANCC contact hours

This interactive activity, featuring expert Alisa Ryncarz, RN, MSN, AGACNP-BC, will focus on the essential role of nurses in achieving shared decision-making (SDM) with patients with HER+/HER2- EBC who require adjuvant therapy. Highlighting specific challenges, the expert will provide learners with valuable practical insights on engaging patients in their care, including strategies for effective communication, relationship-building, evaluating patients’ values and preferences, and assessing and addressing patients’ educational needs.

The Nurse’s Role in Care Coordination and Multidisciplinary Care for HR+/HER2- EBC

Credit Available: 0.50 ANCC contact hours

In this activity, expert Alisa Ryncarz, RN, MSN, AGACNP-BC, will provide learners with valuable practical insights on effective multidisciplinary care coordination for patients with HR+/HER2- EBC who require adjuvant therapy. Through a combination of didactic and case-based discussions, the expert will share best practices and nurse-specific considerations for assessing and addressing care coordination needs of these patients as they transition from acute to long-term management, such as coordination of preventive health screenings and provision of psychological support.
